Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • “Turkey Tail Mushroom Extract” is listed as a grouped ingredient — the label gives one combined amount (1,000 mg) without saying how much of each component you get.

Turkey Tail Capsules contains one active ingredient: beta-1,3/1,6-glucan, a compound extracted from turkey tail mushroom. The glucan is the part of the mushroom studied for its effects on cholesterol and heart health.

The capsule itself is made from hypromellose (a plant-based material), microcrystalline cellulose, and silicon dioxide — these are inactive fillers and binders.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Beta-glucans's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Immune support and general wellness.
  • We looked for evidence on: Exercise-induced respiratory infections, Lower respiratory tract infections, Upper respiratory tract infection (URTI), Wound healing, Gut health, Digestive support — and 1 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: Beta-glucans is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Lower respiratory tract infections (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Beta-glucans is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Exercise-induced respiratory infections, Wound healing.

The beta-glucan in this product is likely effective for two areas. It has shown promise for lowering cholesterol (dyslipidemia) and for supporting coronary heart health.

If you're taking it for those purposes, the data supports a reasonable expectation it may help — though results vary from person to person.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Beta-glucans from food sources are generally well tolerated by most people. However, concentrated supplements like this one lack extensive safety data, so use it with caution.

If you're breastfeeding, there's very little research on supplement doses, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting. In rare cases, high oral doses have caused temporary liver enzyme changes; this occurred in one patient taking a very high dose in a trial, and resolved on its own.

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Beta-glucans.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: immunosuppressants / transplant drugs.
  • For scale: 293 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Double-check this product with your pharmacist or our medication checker if you take immunosuppressants (drugs that dampen your immune system) or blood pressure medications. Beta-glucans may interfere with the former and lower blood pressure further with the latter.

Turkey Tail Mushroom Extract4 drug types · 187 drugs

Antidiabetes Drugs

Theoretically, taking turkey tail mushroom with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Animal research suggests that turkey tail mushroom and a polysaccharide component can have hypoglycemic effects.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cyclophosphamide

Theoretically, the polysaccharide peptide (PSP) component of turkey tail mushroom might increase exposure to cyclophosphamide.
Some animal research shows that the PSP component of turkey tail mushroom can increase the area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) of cyclophosphamide by 44% to 50% and the half-life by 34% to 43%. This interaction could potentially increase the effects and adverse effects of cyclophosphamide. However, it is not known whether PSP affects the levels of the active metabolites of cyclophosphamide that are responsible for its clinical activity.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Tamoxifen (Nolvadex)

Theoretically, the polysaccharide peptide (PSP) component of turkey tail mushroom might interfere with the absorption of tamoxifen.
Animal research suggests that PSP increases the time to reach maximum concentration of a single dose of tamoxifen by about 9.5 hours, or 228%. When repeated doses of tamoxifen were given, the time to reach maximum concentration was increased by about 5.6 hours, or 93%. However, PSP did not affect the maximum concentration or the area under the curve of tamoxifen.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates

Theoretically, the polysaccharide peptide (PSP) component of turkey tail mushroom might inhibit CYP2C9.
Laboratory research suggests that the PSP component of turkey tail mushroom dose-dependently inhibits CYP2C9. Theoretically, taking PSP with drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 might increase drug levels and the risk of adverse effects. However, this has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Turkey Tail Capsules by Real Mushrooms: Common Questions

Does Turkey Tail Capsules by Real Mushrooms interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Turkey Tail Capsules has a known interaction with 461 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Turkey Tail Capsules contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Does turkey tail actually work for cholesterol or heart health?
The beta-glucan in this product is likely effective for both high cholesterol and supporting heart health, based on clinical research. That said, results vary person to person, and a supplement is not a replacement for the full treatment plan your doctor recommends.
Are there side effects I should know about?
Beta-glucans are generally well tolerated. The main caution is that concentrated supplements lack extensive safety data compared to food amounts. In one clinical trial at a very high dose, one patient had temporary liver enzyme changes that resolved on their own.
Is it safe to take while breastfeeding?
There's very little research on supplement doses during breastfeeding, so the data isn't there to say either way. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist — they can weigh the potential benefit against what we don't yet know and help you decide if it's right for you.
Can I take this if I'm on blood pressure medication?
Beta-glucans may lower blood pressure in some people, so taking them alongside blood pressure drugs could push your pressure too low. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if your blood pressure is already well controlled.
What are the inactive ingredients?
The capsule contains hypromellose, microcrystalline cellulose, and silicon dioxide — all standard binders and fillers that help hold the supplement together.
