Phenelzine Sulfate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Adrue interacts with.

Animal research suggests that taking adrue in combination with sodium thiopental or diazepam increases total sleep time up to four-fold compared to the effects of the drugs alone. Theoretically, concomitant use of adrue with CNS depressants might cause additive sedation. Some CNS depressants include benzodiazepines, such as diazepam (Valium), alprazolam (Xanax), triazolam (Halcion), and estazolam (ProSom); barbiturates, such as mephobarbital (Mebaral), phenobarbital (Luminal Sodium), and pentobarbital sodium (Nembutal); zolpidem (Ambien); and others.

Here's the gist: adrue may have a mild calming or sedating effect, and phenelzine (Nardil) can already make people feel drowsy or lightheaded. Put them together and you could feel sleepier than usual, with more dizziness or trouble concentrating. Phenelzine isn't a prodrug, so this isn't about your liver activating it. It's simply two things that can each slow you down stacking up, what we call additive sedation.

I'll be honest with you, this warning comes from animal and lab studies, not human trials, so the real-world risk is uncertain. Still, with an MAOI like phenelzine I'd play it safe. Please run adrue by your pharmacist or prescriber before mixing the two, and don't change your phenelzine dose on your own.

Adrue (Cyperus articulatus) is a sedge whose rhizome has long been used in traditional medicine for nausea and other stomach complaints, and as a mild calming agent. Solid human studies are lacking, so its real benefits and safe doses are not well established. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What Is Phenelzine Used For?

Brand name: Nardil

Phenelzine is used to treat depression — specifically the types described as atypical, nonendogenous, or neurotic depression. This often includes people who have a mix of anxiety and depression, or who have phobic or hypochondriacal features (strong fears about illness or physical symptoms).

It is generally not the first antidepressant a doctor will try. It is best suited for patients who have already tried other antidepressants without enough relief. There is less evidence supporting its use in severe depression with classic biological features (called endogenous depression).
