Why this applies to Norgestrel

Norgestrel falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Aegeline interacts with.

Aegeline inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, aegeline may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use aegeline cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Your birth control pill, norgestrel, is processed by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In a test tube, aegeline appears to slow that same enzyme down. If it did the same thing in your body, your norgestrel levels could drift a little higher, which in theory might mean more progestin-type side effects like spotting between periods, breast tenderness, mood changes, or headaches.

Here's the honest part: this is only a lab finding and has never been seen in real people, so the chance of a meaningful problem is low. The bigger concern is aegeline itself. It's been linked to serious liver injury and U.S. regulators have warned against it, so I'd steer clear of it regardless. Please run any supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first.

Aegeline is a compound originally identified in the bael tree (Aegle marmelos) that gained attention because it was added to some weight-loss and workout supplements. What Is Progestin-Only (norethindrone) Oral Contraceptives Used For?

Brand names: Ovrette, Orval 21

Norethindrone progestin-only pills — sometimes called the "mini-pill" — are used solely to prevent pregnancy. They do not contain estrogen, which makes them an option for women who cannot or prefer not to use estrogen-containing contraceptives.

When taken perfectly (same time every day, no missed pills), fewer than 1 in 100 women will become pregnant in the first year. With typical use, that number rises to about 9 in 100 — mostly because of late or skipped pills. Consistency is everything with this method.
