Here's the gist for lovastatin: your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this statin down and clear it out. In test tube studies, American elder appears to slow that same enzyme. If that happened in real life, lovastatin could build up a bit higher than usual, which can raise the chance of statin side effects like muscle aches, soreness, or weakness, and rarely more serious muscle problems.

Now the honest part: this is only theoretical, based on lab work, not on people. Cooked, food-amount elderberry is unlikely to be a problem. Concentrated supplements are more of a question mark. Before adding regular elderberry capsules, just check with your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

American elder is a North American plant whose cooked, ripe berries and flowers are used mainly for colds, flu, and general immune support. The science behind these uses is limited and most studies focus on the closely related European black elder (Sambucus nigra), so benefits are uncertain. Only properly prepared berries and flowers should be used, since raw berries, leaves, bark, and seeds can cause poisoning.

About Lovastatin

What Is Lovastatin Used For?

Brand names: Mevacor, Altocor

Lovastatin tablets are used along with a low saturated fat, low cholesterol diet when diet and other non-drug measures alone haven't done enough. The goal is to lower total and LDL cholesterol and reduce the risk of atherosclerotic vascular disease (cholesterol-related artery disease).

Lovastatin tablets are used to reduce the risk of heart attack, unstable angina and coronary revascularization procedures in people without symptomatic heart disease. They also slow the progression of coronary atherosclerosis in people with coronary heart disease. They treat primary hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol) and are used in adolescents aged 10 to 17 with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia who meet certain criteria.
