Here's the gist for Rozerem (ramelteon): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear this sleep aid out of your system. Lab studies suggest American elder may slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, ramelteon could hang around longer than usual, which might make you feel groggier, drowsier, or dizzier the next morning.

That said, this is theoretical. The signal comes only from test-tube research, not from people, so we really don't know if everyday elderberry products would matter at all. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but it's worth a quick mention to your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you notice extra morning grogginess.

American elder is a North American plant whose cooked, ripe berries and flowers are used mainly for colds, flu, and general immune support. The science behind these uses is limited and most studies focus on the closely related European black elder (Sambucus nigra), so benefits are uncertain. Only properly prepared berries and flowers should be used, since raw berries, leaves, bark, and seeds can cause poisoning.

Ramelteon tablets — sold as the brand Rozerem and as generic ramelteon — are used to treat insomnia when the main problem is trouble falling asleep at the start of the night. It is not indicated for difficulty staying asleep.

Clinical studies supporting its effectiveness ran up to six months in both adults and elderly patients.
