Apple and Ambrisentan

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Ambrisentan

Ambrisentan falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Apple interacts with.

Consuming apple juice with antihypertensive drugs might interfere with blood pressure control.
Some clinical evidence suggests that consuming apple and cherry juice can increase blood pressure in elderly patients.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence B

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: ambrisentan (Letairis) is one of your blood pressure medicines, working in the lung arteries to keep those vessels relaxed and open. There's some lower-quality clinical evidence that drinking a lot of apple juice (and cherry juice) may nudge blood pressure upward in older adults, which could work against what ambrisentan is trying to do.

In real terms, this isn't about eating a regular apple as a snack, that's perfectly fine. The concern is with large or frequent amounts of juice. If your blood pressure or PAH symptoms (like shortness of breath or low exercise tolerance) seem worse, mention your juice habits to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything. The evidence here is modest, so don't panic, just be aware.

What is Apple?

Apple
  • General nutrition and fiber intake
  • Heart and cholesterol health
  • Blood sugar and weight management
  • Digestive regularity
  • Antioxidant support

Apples are a nutritious whole food that provides fiber, vitamins, and antioxidant plant compounds, and eating them regularly fits well into a healthy diet. While research suggests apples may support heart and digestive health, most claims about concentrated apple supplements or extracts are not strongly proven, so enjoy apples as food and talk with your pharmacist before using high-dose products.

About Ambrisentan

What Is Ambrisentan Used For?

Brand names: Letairis, Volibris

Ambrisentan tablets and Letairis tablets are both used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH, WHO Group 1) — a condition where the blood pressure in the arteries leading to the lungs is dangerously high. Both are approved to help adults exercise better and slow the worsening of PAH.

Both ambrisentan tablets and Letairis are also approved to be used together with tadalafil (another PAH medicine) to further reduce the risk of disease progression, lower the chance of hospitalization for worsening PAH, and improve exercise ability. Most of the clinical evidence was in patients with mild-to-moderate symptoms and PAH caused by unknown or inherited causes, or PAH linked to connective tissue diseases.
