Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with Treprostinil (Orenitram), which you take to lower the high blood pressure in your lung arteries. There is some lower-quality clinical evidence that drinking apple juice (and cherry juice) may nudge blood pressure upward in older adults. If that happens, it could work against what your treprostinil is trying to do, making it a little harder to keep your blood pressure where your doctor wants it.

To be clear, this is about concentrated apple juice, not the occasional fresh apple, which is unlikely to cause trouble. Treprostinil is finely dosed, so don't change anything on your own. If you regularly drink apple juice, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your readings.

About Apple

What is Apple?

Apple
  • General nutrition and fiber intake
  • Heart and cholesterol health
  • Blood sugar and weight management
  • Digestive regularity
  • Antioxidant support

Apples are a nutritious whole food that provides fiber, vitamins, and antioxidant plant compounds, and eating them regularly fits well into a healthy diet. While research suggests apples may support heart and digestive health, most claims about concentrated apple supplements or extracts are not strongly proven, so enjoy apples as food and talk with your pharmacist before using high-dose products.

About Treprostinil

What Is Treprostinil Used For?

Treprostinil treats pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH; WHO Group 1) — high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs. Depending on the product and route, it is used to improve exercise ability, delay disease progression, or reduce symptoms tied to physical activity. Remodulin and treprostinil injection products are also indicated for patients who need to transition away from another PAH medicine called epoprostenol.

Tyvaso, Tyvaso DPI, and Yutrepia (inhaled forms) are additionally approved to treat pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease (PH-ILD; WHO Group 3) — lung-pressure problems caused by scarring or inflammation in the lung tissue itself. Orenitram (extended-release oral tablet) is specifically indicated to delay disease progression and improve exercise capacity in PAH.
