Acetaminophen, Hydrocodone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Atractylodes interacts with.

Theoretically, atractylodes might decrease the levels of CYP1A2 substrates.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to induce CYP1A2 activity. This effect has not been shown in humans.

Here's the gist for your Vicodin or Norco (acetaminophen with hydrocodone). In animal studies, high doses of atractylodes seemed to speed up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Since this drug is partly handled by that enzyme, the theory is that atractylodes could nudge your body to clear it a bit faster, which might mean slightly less pain relief. This is rated as a minor, theoretical concern only.

Honestly, this has only been seen in lab and animal research, not in people. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The bigger thing to watch with this medicine is the acetaminophen load on your liver and the drowsiness from hydrocodone. If you want to try atractylodes, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Acetaminophen, Hydrocodone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, atractylodes might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to inhibit CYP3A1 activity, which is a homolog to the human CYP3A4 enzyme. This effect has not been shown in humans.

Here's the gist for your Norco or Vicodin (acetaminophen with hydrocodone). The hydrocodone part is handled in part by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In animal studies, high doses of atractylodes seemed to slow that enzyme down. If the same thing happened in people, hydrocodone could clear a little slower and build up, which might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, or slowed breathing.

The important caveat: this is only theoretical and comes from lab and animal work, not from real people. It's rated a minor interaction, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since this medicine contains an opioid, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding atractylodes.
