Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Atractylodes interacts with.

Theoretically, atractylodes might decrease the levels of CYP1A2 substrates.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to induce CYP1A2 activity. This effect has not been shown in humans.

Here's the gist with your birth control pill (Lybrel) and atractylodes. In animal studies done at very high doses, this herb seemed to speed up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Since your body uses enzymes like this to clear estrogen, a faster pace could, in theory, lower the amount of hormone in your system. If hormone levels dipped enough, that might mean weaker protection against pregnancy or some breakthrough spotting.

The important part: this has only been seen in animals, never confirmed in people, and it's rated as a minor, theoretical concern. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but because reliable birth control matters, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding atractylodes.

Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, atractylodes might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to inhibit CYP3A1 activity, which is a homolog to the human CYP3A4 enzyme. This effect has not been shown in humans.

Your birth control pill (Lybrel) contains two hormones, ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel, and your body partly clears them using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. The theory here is that atractylodes might slow that enzyme down, which could let a little more hormone build up in your system. If that happened, you could notice more of the usual estrogen-related effects, like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or spotting.

Honestly though, I wouldn't lose sleep over this one. This is rated minor, and the only evidence comes from animal and lab work using high doses. It has never been shown in people. Still, since this is a medication you rely on every day, it's worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor before you start an atractylodes supplement.
