Beet + Clarithromycin
Clarithromycin brand names: Biaxin, Biaxin XL.
Beet has a moderate interaction with Clarithromycin. Theoretically, beet might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Clarithromycin
Clarithromycin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Beet interacts with.
In vitro research suggests that betanin, the major pigment in beet, competitively inhibits CYP3A4 in a dose-dependent manner similarly to strong CYP3A4 inhibitor ketoconazole.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear clarithromycin out. In lab dishes, a pigment in beets (betanin) seems to slow that enzyme down. If that held true in real life, clarithromycin could hang around a bit longer and build up, which might mean more of its usual side effects like nausea, stomach upset, a funny metallic taste, or diarrhea.
The important part: this is only test-tube data, not something proven in people. Eating beets at dinner is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated beetroot supplements are a bigger unknown. If you take both regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

About Beet
What is Beet?
- High blood pressure
- Exercise and athletic performance
- Heart and circulation support
- General antioxidant/anti-inflammatory support
- Liver and digestive support
Beet, especially beetroot juice, is a nitrate-rich food that may modestly lower blood pressure and slightly improve exercise performance in some people. It is generally safe as a food, but supplement effects are modest and not a substitute for prescribed treatment, so talk with your pharmacist or doctor before relying on it.
About Clarithromycin
What Is Clarithromycin Used For?
Brand names: Biaxin, Biaxin XL
Clarithromycin treats mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It does not work against viruses.
Not every product is approved for every use. Clarithromycin extended-release tablets are approved only for three infections in adults: flare-ups of chronic bronchitis caused by bacteria, acute sinus infection (maxillary sinusitis), and community-acquired pneumonia. Clarithromycin tablets and oral suspension cover a wider list, including throat and tonsil infections, skin infections, and ear infections in children. H. pylori treatment is listed for the tablets only.

Clarithromycin Is Linked to Lower Levels of 7 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Clarithromycin as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Beet — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
