Beet and Ibuprofen, Oxycodone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Ibuprofen, Oxycodone

Ibuprofen, Oxycodone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Beet interacts with.

Theoretically, beet might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that betanin, the major pigment in beet, competitively inhibits CYP3A4 in a dose-dependent manner similarly to strong CYP3A4 inhibitor ketoconazole.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

This combo pill pairs ibuprofen with oxycodone. The oxycodone part is partly handled by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. The idea here is that a pigment in beets (betanin) might slow that enzyme down, which could let oxycodone build up a bit more than usual. If that happened, you might feel more of oxycodone's effects, like extra drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, or slowed breathing.

Here's the important part: this concern comes only from lab (test tube) research, not from real people, so it's theoretical. Eating beets or drinking a normal glass of beet juice is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated beet supplements are less studied. If you take this medicine regularly, just check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding beet supplements.
