Here's the thing about combining bergamot with simeprevir (Olysio): both can make your skin more touchy in the sun. Simeprevir itself is known to cause photosensitivity, meaning you can sunburn faster or break out in a rash with sun exposure. Bergamot essential oil contains a compound called bergapten that does much the same thing, so using them together could stack that effect.

I want to be straight with you: this concern is theoretical and applies mainly to the topical essential oil, not the bergamot extract people take for cholesterol. Still, while you're on simeprevir, it's smart to protect your skin with sunscreen and clothing. Run any bergamot product past your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Simeprevir

What Is Simeprevir Used For?

Brand name: Olysio

  • Simeprevir is used along with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol) and peginterferon alfa (Pegasys) to treat chronic hepatitis C (an ongoing viral infection that damages the liver). Simeprevir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the body. Simeprevir may not prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
