Beta-glucans + nitisinone
nitisinone brand names: Orfadin, Nityr.
We found no known interaction between Beta-glucans and nitisinone in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.
Beta-glucans and nitisinone
We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.
No Known Interaction Found
We did not find a documented interaction between nitisinone and Beta-glucans in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.
If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.
Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Why No Interaction Is Listed for nitisinone
Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. nitisinone is filed under 2 classifications — cytochrome p450 2c9 (cyp2c9) inhibitors, oral drugs. Beta-glucans has documented interactions with 2 drug classes — the most serious being antihypertensive drugs (moderate) and immunosuppressants (moderate) — and none of nitisinone’s classifications are among them.
Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.
Beta-glucans Does Interact With Other Medications
Beta-glucans has 293 moderate known drug interactions in our database — nitisinone isn’t one of them. If you take anything else, check it against the full list below.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With nitisinone
This page covers Beta-glucans only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the nitisinone page lists 21 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.
The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Cannabinol (cbn) (moderate), Cannabis (moderate), Coffee Charcoal (moderate) and Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (thc) (moderate).
By severity: 1 major · 11 moderate · 9 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the nitisinone page
“For a child or adult with hereditary tyrosinemia type 1, nitisinone (Orfadin, Nityr) is the medication holding a dangerous metabolic disease in check, which is why the 21 supplements on this page warrant genuine care rather than a shrug. Activated charcoal is the single major-rated entry and the one to understand first, since it can so…”

Where Beta-glucans and nitisinone Sit Against Everything Else
Out of every supplement and medication people look up on HelloPharmacist, here is where these two land this week — and which way each has been moving.
#248 of 1,452 supplements looked up here in the last 7 days
#524 of 2,830 medications looked up here in the last 7 days
Position among everything looked up on this site, not a measure of how commonly either one is used or how important it is. A supplement can climb this list because of a news story. It counts every request to the page, automated ones included, and nothing here identifies anyone.
Where does our data come from?
- Source: the Natural Medicines (TRC Healthcare) clinical database — the evidence-graded professional reference for herb & supplement interactions.
- Citation library: 103,510 references behind our interaction content, 65,311 of them resolved to verified PubMed/DOI sources. See every Beta-glucans reference on this page ↓
- Freshness: we automatically re-check this combination every week — this pair was last verified September 20, 2026. The Beta-glucans and nitisinone records this page draws on were last updated July 10, 2026.
- What “no known interaction” means: no documented interaction in the sources above — not a guarantee of safety. Supplements are studied far less than prescription drugs, so we say exactly what the evidence supports, and nothing more.
About Beta-glucans
What is Beta-glucans?
- High cholesterol
- Heart health
- Immune support
- Blood sugar control
- Wound care (topical)
Beta-glucans are natural fibers found in oats, barley, mushrooms, and yeast. The strongest evidence supports the oat and barley types for modestly lowering cholesterol and blood sugar, while immune-related claims from yeast and mushroom sources are far less proven. They are generally well tolerated, but check with your pharmacist before starting any supplement.

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Beta-glucans is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Beta-glucans record says about it on its own.
Beta-glucans: dosing
There is no single "official" supplement dose for all beta-glucans, and the right amount depends on the source and the product. For cholesterol benefits from oats and barley, health authorities often refer to a daily amount of beta-glucan as part of the diet, which can be reached by eating oat and barley foods or using a labeled supplement.Yeast and mushroom beta-glucan supplements vary widely, and a clearly proven dose has not been established.

About Nitisinone
What Is Nitisinone Used For?
Brand names: Orfadin, Nityr
Nitisinone (as Orfadin capsules, Orfadin oral suspension, Nityr tablets, and generic Nitisinone capsules) is used to treat hereditary tyrosinemia type 1 (HT-1) — a rare inherited disease in which the body cannot properly break down the amino acid tyrosine, leading to toxic buildup that damages the liver and kidneys. It is used in both adults and children, always together with a strict low-tyrosine, low-phenylalanine diet.
Harliku tablets are approved for a different rare inherited condition: alkaptonuria (AKU). In adults with AKU, Harliku reduces the level of homogentisic acid (HGA) — a harmful substance that builds up in the urine and body tissues. Harliku is not approved for HT-1, and the other nitisinone products are not approved for AKU.
