Acalabrutinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea) interacts with.

Theoretically, BMPEA might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that BMPEA inhibits CYP3A4 by up to 37%.

Here's the basic idea with this pair. Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear acalabrutinib out of your system. BMPEA, in lab (test tube) studies, appears to slow that enzyme down by around a third. If that holds true in people, acalabrutinib could build up a bit higher than expected, which may mean more of its side effects, things like bruising, bleeding, headaches, fatigue, diarrhea, or a higher chance of infection.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's only theoretical and comes from cell research, not human studies, so we don't truly know how much it matters. On top of that, BMPEA is an unapproved stimulant tied to heart and blood pressure risks, so I'd avoid it regardless. Please run any supplement past your oncology team or pharmacist first.

What Is Acalabrutinib Used For?

Brand name: Calquence

Calquence is used to treat adults with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) — either newly diagnosed (in combination with bendamustine and rituximab, for patients who are not candidates for a stem cell transplant) or previously treated (after at least one prior therapy). It is also used to treat adults with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) or small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL).

Both the capsule and tablet forms of Calquence are approved for all three of these uses. The specific combination regimen and treatment schedule depend on the condition being treated and what other medicines are used alongside it — your care team will map that out for you.
