Drug & supplement interaction

Bismuth + Losartan Potassium

Losartan Potassium brand name: Cozaar.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Bismuth and Losartan Potassium in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Bismuth and Losartan Potassium

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Losartan Potassium and Bismuth in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Bismuth safety at a glance

Bismuth overall Use caution Generally safe for short-term use, but most products contain salicylate and should not be overused.
Pregnancy Avoid Bismuth subsalicylate is generally avoided in pregnancy, especially later, due to its salicylate content.
Breastfeeding Use caution Salicylate can pass into breast milk, so check with a doctor before use while nursing.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Losartan Potassium

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Losartan Potassium is filed under 7 classifications — including angiotensin receptor blockers (arbs), cytochrome p450 2c9 (cyp2c9) substrates, antihypertensive drugs. Bismuth has documented interactions with 4 drug classes — the most serious being anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs (moderate), aspirin (moderate) and omeprazole (prilosec) (moderate) — and none of Losartan Potassium’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Bismuth and Losartan Potassium May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do. 3 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

“Orally, multiple cases of bismuth-related neurotoxicity have been reported. In general, the risk of neurotoxicity from bismuth salts appears to be greater for colloidal bismuth than other forms due to the greater bioavailability of colloidal bismuth. In most cases, the neurotoxicity results from excessive use of bismuth salts over prolonged time periods (up to 30 years).”

About Bismuth

What is Bismuth?

  • Upset stomach and indigestion
  • Diarrhea
  • Heartburn and nausea
  • Helicobacter pylori treatment (with other drugs)
  • Traveler's diarrhea prevention

Bismuth is a metallic element used in medicine mostly as bismuth subsalicylate (the active ingredient in some well-known stomach remedies) to ease upset stomach, heartburn, nausea, and diarrhea. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but it can cause harmless black stools or a dark tongue, and because most products contain salicylate, it carries cautions similar to aspirin. Always follow the label and check with a pharmacist before regular use.

Mineral element (not a plant); used as bismuth salts · Chewable tablets, caplets, liquid suspensions (commonly as bismuth subsalicylate)

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Bismuth is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Bismuth record says about it on its own.

Bismuth: dosing

There is no single "supplement" dose of bismuth. The right amount depends on the specific product and the reason for use. Always follow the directions on the package label for the product you have, and do not exceed the maximum daily amount listed. For medical uses such as H. pylori treatment, dosing is set by a doctor as part of a multi-drug regimen. Do not use bismuth products for more than a couple of days for diarrhea without checking with a healthcare provider.

About Losartan

What Is Losartan Used For?

Brand name: Cozaar

Losartan tablets — available as branded Cozaar and several generic products — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Losartan tablets are also used to reduce the risk of stroke in people with high blood pressure who also have left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged left side of the heart). Note: evidence suggests this stroke-risk benefit may not apply to Black patients.

Losartan tablets are additionally approved to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and signs of kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy). Arbli, the oral suspension form, shares these same approved uses.
