In humans, bismuth subgallate activates factor XII and accelerates the coagulation cascade.

Here's the connection worth knowing. Ibrutinib (Imbruvica) isn't a classic blood thinner, but it does have a real blood-thinning side effect, it can raise your risk of bruising and bleeding. Bismuth, the kind found in many stomach remedies, has been shown to nudge the clotting system in the opposite direction by activating a clotting factor. So in theory, regular bismuth use could slightly work against that bleeding-related effect.

Honestly, this one is more of a textbook idea than a proven, real-world problem, the evidence is theoretical only. An occasional dose for an upset stomach is unlikely to cause trouble. Still, because ibrutinib already affects bleeding, it's smart to check with your pharmacist or oncologist before using bismuth products regularly.

Bismuth is a metallic element used in medicine mostly as bismuth subsalicylate (the active ingredient in some well-known stomach remedies) to ease upset stomach, heartburn, nausea, and diarrhea. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but it can cause harmless black stools or a dark tongue, and because most products contain salicylate, it carries cautions similar to aspirin. Always follow the label and check with a pharmacist before regular use.

What Is Ibrutinib Used For?

Brand name: Imbruvica

Imbruvica (ibrutinib) is approved for adult patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) / small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL), including those with a specific genetic change called 17p deletion, and for adult patients with Waldenström's macroglobulinemia (WM), a rare type of blood cancer.

Imbruvica is also approved for chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) — a complication that can occur after a stem cell transplant — in adults and children aged 1 year and older whose condition did not respond to at least one prior treatment.
