Bitter Melon and Dulaglutide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Dulaglutide

Dulaglutide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Bitter Melon interacts with.

Taking bitter melon with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Bitter melon can lower blood glucose levels and might have additive effects when used with antidiabetes drugs. This might increase the risk of hypoglycemia in some patients. Monitor blood glucose levels closely.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence B

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: both bitter melon and your Trulicity (dulaglutide) work to push your blood sugar down. Bitter melon isn't broken down or activated by dulaglutide or anything like that, so this isn't a liver enzyme issue. Instead, it's an additive effect. Stack two blood-sugar-lowering things together and the total drop can be bigger than you planned.

What that can look like in real life is low blood sugar (hypoglycemia): shakiness, sweating, dizziness, a racing heart, confusion, or feeling unusually hungry. The studies behind this are modest in quality, so it isn't a sure thing, and small culinary amounts in food are less likely to matter than concentrated supplement doses. Still, if you want to try bitter melon, check with your pharmacist or doctor first and watch your numbers closely.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dulaglutide page

“Because dulaglutide (Trulicity) already lowers blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, nearly every entry on this page deserves genuine respect, and one demands it outright. Almost all of these supplements pull glucose in one direction or the other, so the danger that matters most is hypoglycemia, blood sugar dropping too low.”

About Bitter Melon

What is Bitter Melon?

Bitter Melon
  • Blood sugar support
  • Diabetes
  • Digestive complaints
  • Antioxidant source
  • Skin conditions

Bitter melon is a tropical fruit eaten as food and used in traditional medicine, most often for blood sugar control. While some small studies hint it may modestly lower blood sugar, the evidence is limited and inconsistent, so it should not replace proven diabetes treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you take diabetes medicines or are pregnant.
