Why this applies to Cefixime

Cefixime falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Black Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin. Although many of these studies evaluated blond psyllium, the fiber content in black psyllium may have similar effects.

Here's the simple version: black psyllium is a soluble fiber that swells into a thick gel in your gut. That gel can grab onto pills sitting in your stomach and intestines, which may slow or slightly reduce how much of your cefixime (Suprax) actually gets absorbed. With an antibiotic, you really want the full dose in your bloodstream so it can knock out the infection, so getting less of it isn't ideal.

The good news is this is rated a minor, possible interaction, and it's mostly theoretical based on how fiber behaves with other oral drugs. An easy fix solves it: space them out. Take your cefixime first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your psyllium. If you're unsure about timing or you're treating something like gonorrhea or a stubborn infection, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Black psyllium is a soluble-fiber supplement made from the seeds of a Plantago plant, used mostly to ease constipation and support digestive health. It is best known and most studied for relieving constipation and may modestly help lower cholesterol, but it must always be taken with plenty of water. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you have swallowing problems or bowel disorders.

About Cefixime

What Is Cefixime Used For?

Brand name: Suprax

Cefixime treats several bacterial infections in adults and children six months and older. These include uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs), otitis media (ear infections), pharyngitis and tonsillitis (strep throat and tonsil infections), acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (sudden worsening of ongoing bronchitis), and uncomplicated gonorrhea (cervical or urethral).

Cefixime tablets are indicated only for adults and children weighing more than 45 kg or older than 12 years, and tablets are not approved for otitis media — ear infections must be treated with the oral suspension or, where available, chewable tablets. Cefixime oral suspension and capsules are approved for the same infections across the full pediatric age range (six months and older).
