Rabeprazole Sodium falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Black Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin. Although many of these studies evaluated blond psyllium, the fiber content in black psyllium may have similar effects.

Here's the simple version: black psyllium is a soluble fiber that turns into a thick gel in your gut. That gel can sometimes grab onto medicines you swallow and slow or shrink how much gets absorbed. With rabeprazole, the worry is that less of your dose might make it into your body, which could mean weaker acid control and a return of heartburn or reflux symptoms.

The good news is this is rated a minor, theoretical concern, and the evidence is mixed. Psyllium hasn't been clearly shown to lower rabeprazole levels. An easy fix is to space them out: take your rabeprazole first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your psyllium, with plenty of water. If your reflux symptoms creep back, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

Black psyllium is a soluble-fiber supplement made from the seeds of a Plantago plant, used mostly to ease constipation and support digestive health. It is best known and most studied for relieving constipation and may modestly help lower cholesterol, but it must always be taken with plenty of water. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you have swallowing problems or bowel disorders.

About Rabeprazole

What Is Rabeprazole Used For?

Brand names: Aciphex, Aciphex Sprinkle

Rabeprazole delayed-release tablets treat a range of acid-related conditions in adults, including healing and maintenance of erosive or ulcerative GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), symptomatic GERD, duodenal ulcers, and pathological hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. They are also used alongside antibiotics (amoxicillin and clarithromycin) to eradicate H. pylori bacteria and reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer coming back.

In adolescents 12 years and older, rabeprazole delayed-release tablets are approved for short-term treatment of symptomatic GERD. Both AcipHex and Rabeprazole Sodium delayed-release tablets share this indication set for adults and adolescents 12 and older.
