Blond Psyllium and Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Blond Psyllium interacts with whole categories of medication. Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Blond Psyllium in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

ORAL DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone

Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Blond Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Conversely, case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the simple version for your birth control pill (Loestrin, Ovcon, and the others that combine ethinyl estradiol with norethindrone). Psyllium fiber forms a thick gel in your gut, and that gel can change how some pills are absorbed. With this combo, the concern is mostly about timing, not a dangerous reaction. Interestingly, animal research actually suggests psyllium slows down but slightly increases the absorption of ethinyl estradiol, so it's not likely to make your pill fail.

Still, because this is only a minor, mostly theoretical interaction with weak evidence, the easy fix is good spacing. Take your pill first, then your psyllium about 30 to 60 minutes later, always with plenty of water. If you rely on this pill for pregnancy prevention, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist before adding daily fiber.

ETHINYL ESTRADIOL

2 of 2
Theoretically, taking blond psyllium at the same time as ethinyl estradiol might alter levels of estradiol.
Concurrent use of blond psyllium with ethinyl estradiol results in a slight increase in the extent of ethinyl estradiol absorption and a slower rate of absorption. However, this is unlikely to be clinically significant.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Good news here: if you take a psyllium fiber supplement (like Metamucil) and your birth control or hormone pill (the ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone combo found in brands like Loestrin or Ovcon), the two are very unlikely to cause you any trouble. The concern is purely theoretical and comes from lab work, not real patients.

The idea is that psyllium's gel might slightly change how much estrogen your gut soaks up and slow down how fast it gets there. In practice, that small shift isn't expected to make your pill less effective or cause extra side effects like nausea or breakthrough bleeding. To be safe and tidy, you can simply space the fiber a couple of hours from your pill. If you have any worries about your contraception working, check with your pharmacist or doctor.
