Blond Psyllium and Mineral Oil

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ORAL DRUGS

Why this applies to Mineral Oil

Mineral Oil falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Blond Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Conversely, case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's a slightly different angle from the usual pill interaction. Mineral oil isn't really absorbed into your bloodstream like a typical medicine. It's a lubricant laxative that works right inside your gut, coating the stool and making it slip out more easily. Blond psyllium is also working in that same neighborhood, a bulk-forming fiber that soaks up water and adds bulk.

Because both act locally on your bowels, the bigger thing is that the psyllium gel could surround the oil and blunt how well it does its job. Taking them at the same time may make either one less effective. The evidence here is theoretical and the effect is minor, but to keep things simple, space them out by an hour or two and drink plenty of water. Check with your pharmacist if you use both regularly.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Mineral Oil page

“Everything on record for mineral oil (Kondremul Plain) comes down to one theme, absorption in the gut, and it deserves genuine care, chiefly because of activated charcoal. Charcoal binds a wide array of medicines and can sharply cut how much of them the body actually takes in, and it carries this list's only major rating, so understand…”
