Blond Psyllium and Psyllium (OTC drug)

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ORAL DRUGS

Why this applies to Psyllium (OTC drug)

Psyllium (OTC drug) falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Blond Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Conversely, case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's a fun wrinkle: the supplement and the medicine you asked about are actually the same thing. Blond psyllium is the fiber, and Metamucil-style psyllium is simply that fiber sold as an over-the-counter laxative. So taking them "together" really just means taking more psyllium, which mostly adds up to a bigger fiber dose.

The thing to watch isn't psyllium fighting with itself, but psyllium's general habit of grabbing onto other pills in your gut. That thick gel it forms can slow or change how some oral medications are absorbed. A simple fix is to take psyllium about 30 to 60 minutes apart from your other medicines, and always with a full glass of water. If you take anything where timing matters, run it by your pharmacist.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Psyllium (OTC drug) page

“Activated charcoal tops the psyllium (Metamucil) list and is the one entry rated major. Charcoal binds many medicines in the gut and can cut how much of them reaches the body, so pairing it with anything you take by mouth deserves real caution, and I would read that entry before the rest.”
