Boswellia Serrata + Losartan Potassium
Losartan Potassium brand name: Cozaar.
Losartan Potassium falls into 2 drug categories that Boswellia Serrata can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, Boswellia serrata might increase the levels of CYP2C9 substrates.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Boswellia Serrata interacts with whole categories of medication. Losartan Potassium falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Boswellia Serrata in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Losartan Potassium
Losartan Potassium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Boswellia Serrata interacts with.
In vitro research shows that Boswellia serrata gum resin inhibits CYP2C9 enzymes.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's something worth knowing about pairing boswellia with your losartan. Losartan is actually a bit unusual: it needs to be converted by a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 into its more active form, which does most of the blood-pressure-lowering work. In lab studies, boswellic acids appear to slow down that very enzyme. In theory, that could mean a little less of losartan's active form is made, which might blunt some of its effect on your blood pressure.
I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes only from test-tube research, not from real people, so we don't know if it actually matters day to day. Casual amounts are unlikely to be a big deal, but if you take a concentrated boswellia supplement, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor and keep an eye on your home blood pressure readings.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Losartan Potassium also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that Boswellia serrata gum resin inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Other in vitro research shows that Boswellia serrata extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes at most concentrations, although it may modestly induce enzyme activity at low concentrations.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the wrinkle with losartan (Cozaar): your liver actually has to convert it into its more active form, and the enzyme called CYP3A4 helps do that conversion. So losartan behaves a bit like a prodrug. In lab studies, boswellia mostly blocks (slows down) CYP3A4. If that happened in your body, you could end up making a little less of the active form, which might blunt losartan's blood pressure lowering effect.
Now, the honest part: this is all theoretical, based on test-tube research, not on real people. A few low-dose lab readings even hinted boswellia could speed the enzyme up instead. The practical takeaway is to keep an eye on your home blood pressure readings and mention the boswellia to your pharmacist or doctor before you start. Don't change your losartan on your own.

- Inflammatory bowel conditions
Boswellia serrata is a tree resin used in traditional medicine, mainly for joint pain and inflammation. About Losartan
What Is Losartan Used For?
Brand name: Cozaar
Losartan treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older. Keeping blood pressure under control lowers the risk of serious events like stroke and heart attack.
It is also used to reduce the risk of stroke in people who have high blood pressure and left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged heart muscle). Note: evidence suggests this stroke-risk benefit may not apply to Black patients. Additionally, losartan treats diabetic nephropathy — kidney damage caused by type 2 diabetes — in people who also have high blood pressure.
