Broccoli and Estradiol, Norgestimate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Estradiol, Norgestimate

Estradiol, Norgestimate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Broccoli interacts with.

Theoretically, broccoli might reduce the levels and effects of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Pharmacokinetic research in humans shows that eating 500 grams of fresh broccoli daily for 6-12 days can increase CYP1A2 activity by 10% to 200%. Induction of CYP1A2 activity by broccoli is attributed to its glucosinolate constituents.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with Ortho-Prefest (estradiol plus norgestimate) and broccoli. Eating a lot of broccoli, around 500 grams a day, can rev up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which helps process estrogen in your body. When that enzyme works faster, your body may clear the estradiol a bit quicker, which in theory could slightly weaken the hormone's effect. For something like Ortho-Prefest, that might mean less control of menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes.

The honest truth: this is mostly theoretical and based on weaker research, and normal amounts of broccoli on your plate are very unlikely to cause a problem. If you're loading up on broccoli supplements or extracts daily, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.
