Alprazolam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Bulbine Natalensis interacts with.

Theoretically, Bulbine natalensis stem might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Bulbine natalensis stem extract induces CYP3A4 mRNA expression and enzyme activity. Theoretically, this may increase the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates, but this has not been studied in humans.

Here's the gist for Xanax (alprazolam): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear it from your body. In lab studies, Bulbine natalensis appears to speed up that enzyme. If that holds true in people, your body could break down alprazolam a little faster, which might leave you with less of it on board. The practical worry is weaker relief of your anxiety or panic symptoms, or feeling like your usual dose just isn't doing as much.

I'll be straight with you, though: this is only test-tube evidence, with nothing studied in actual patients, so it's more of a theoretical concern than a proven one. Don't change your alprazolam on your own. Just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before adding this supplement.

What Is Alprazolam Used For?

Brand names: Xanax, Niravam

Alprazolam treats generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia, in adults. These uses are supported across multiple alprazolam products, including tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, oral solution, and extended-release tablets.

Xanax (tablet) is indicated for the acute treatment of GAD and for panic disorder. Xanax XR (extended-release tablet) and alprazolam extended-release tablets are indicated specifically for panic disorder with or without agoraphobia — not for GAD. Alprazolam orally disintegrating tablets and alprazolam oral solution are indicated for both GAD and panic disorder.
