Valsartan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Bulbine Natalensis interacts with.

Theoretically, Bulbine natalensis stem might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Bulbine natalensis stem extract induces CYP2C9 mRNA expression and enzyme activity. Theoretically, this may increase the metabolism of CYP2C9 substrates; however, this has not been studied in humans.

Here's the idea behind this pairing. Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to help process valsartan. Lab studies (done in test tubes, not people) suggest Bulbine natalensis may speed that enzyme up. If that held true in humans, it could clear valsartan a little faster and make it work less well. In practice, that might look like blood pressure creeping back up, or for heart failure, less of the benefit you're counting on.

I want to be honest though: this is only a theoretical concern from early lab data, and it hasn't been confirmed in real patients. On top of that, Bulbine itself has raised liver and kidney safety questions, so it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.

About Valsartan

What Is Valsartan Used For?

Brand names: Diovan, Prexxartan

Valsartan treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, heart failure in adults, and reduces the risk of cardiovascular death in adults who have had a heart attack and have a weakened heart muscle. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.

Diovan (valsartan) tablets are approved to treat high blood pressure in children as young as 1 year old. Valsartan tablets (other brands) are approved for children 6 years and older. Valsartan oral solution is specifically indicated for patients with heart failure or post-heart attack left ventricular dysfunction who are unable to swallow tablets.
