Vinblastine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Bulbine Natalensis interacts with.

Theoretically, Bulbine natalensis stem might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Bulbine natalensis stem extract induces CYP3A4 mRNA expression and enzyme activity. Theoretically, this may increase the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates, but this has not been studied in humans.

Here's the concern with pairing Bulbine natalensis with vinblastine. Vinblastine is cleared from your body by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab and animal studies suggest this plant may speed that enzyme up (induce it), which could cause your body to break down vinblastine faster. If that happens, less of the drug stays in your system, and it may not fight your cancer as well as it should.

I want to be honest about the evidence: this is theoretical and based only on test-tube and animal data, never confirmed in people. Still, vinblastine is serious chemotherapy where dosing matters a great deal, so this isn't something to guess about. Please don't start this supplement without first running it by your oncologist or pharmacist.

Here's the situation with vinblastine (Velban) and Bulbine natalensis. Your body uses a tiny cellular pump called P-glycoprotein to push vinblastine out of cells. Lab studies hint that this supplement might rev up that pump, which in theory could move more vinblastine out and lower how much stays active where it's needed. The worry would be a weaker punch from a chemo drug you really want working at full strength.

I want to be honest though: this is only test-tube data, and the actual effect on real people hasn't been measured, so it's quite uncertain. Since vinblastine is a serious cancer treatment with a narrow margin, please don't add Bulbine natalensis without first checking with your oncologist or pharmacist.

What Is Vinblastine Used For?

Brand name: Velban

Vinblastine Sulfate Injection is used in the treatment of a range of cancers. Conditions that tend to respond well include generalized Hodgkin's disease, lymphocytic lymphoma, histiocytic lymphoma, advanced mycosis fungoides (a type of skin lymphoma), advanced testicular cancer, Kaposi's sarcoma, and Letterer-Siwe disease (a rare immune condition also called histiocytosis X).

It may also be used for cancers that respond less reliably, such as choriocarcinoma resistant to other chemotherapy drugs, and breast cancer that has not responded to hormonal therapy. Vinblastine is often given as part of a combination chemotherapy regimen alongside other cancer medicines to improve response rates.
