Saquinavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INHIBITORS — the group Cannabinol (cbn) interacts with.

Theoretically, CYP3A4 inhibitors might increase the levels and clinical effects of cannabinol.
In vitro research shows that CYP3A4 enzymes are involved in the 8-hydroxylation of cannabinol. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for this pairing. Saquinavir is a strong blocker of an enzyme called CYP3A4, and lab studies suggest that same enzyme helps break down CBN. So in theory, taking saquinavir alongside CBN could slow CBN's breakdown and let more of it build up in your body. That might make CBN's effects, like drowsiness or grogginess, feel stronger or last longer.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is based only on test-tube research, and it has not actually been reported in people. So it's more of a theoretical heads-up than a proven problem. Saquinavir itself is too important to your HIV treatment to mess with, so please don't change it. If you're thinking about a CBN sleep product, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Saquinavir Used For?

Brand names: Invirase, Fortovase

  • Saquinavir is used in combination with ritonavir (Norvir) and other medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Saquinavir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of HIV in the blood. Although saquinavir does not cure HIV, it may decrease your chance of developing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and HIV-related illnesses such as serious infections or cancer. Taking these medications along with practicing safer sex and making other lifestyle changes may decrease the risk of transmitting the HIV virus to other people.
