Here's the key thing to understand about this pairing: the concern runs in one direction. Acitretin can mildly slow down an enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear THC, the part of cannabis that gets you high. So in theory, mixing the two could let THC build up a bit more than usual, meaning a stronger or longer-lasting effect, more drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling out of it. It's the cannabis that gets boosted here, not your psoriasis medicine.

That said, this is only a theoretical concern based on how these chemicals behave in the lab, not on real reports of people running into trouble. Acitretin is also a fairly weak CYP3A4 inhibitor, so any real-world effect is likely small. Still, it's worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor, especially since both can cause drowsiness.

What Is Acitretin Used For?

Brand name: Soriatane

Acitretin capsules are approved to treat severe psoriasis in adults. It is typically reserved for patients whose psoriasis has not responded to other treatments, or when other treatments are not appropriate options.

Because of serious risks — including the risk of severe birth defects — acitretin is not a first-line choice. In women who could become pregnant, it should only be used when the benefits clearly outweigh the risks and strict pregnancy-prevention measures are in place.
