Here's the gist with carob and your rifampin. Carob is rich in tannins and fiber, and lab studies suggest it can bind to things in your gut and slow how well they get absorbed. The worry here is purely about absorption in the stomach, not how your liver handles the drug. If carob latched onto your rifampin, you could absorb a little less of it, and with a TB or meningitis-prevention antibiotic, you really want the full dose working.

Now, honestly, this is a theoretical concern based only on lab and animal research, so it's rated minor. To be safe and simple, just take your rifampin first and wait about 30 to 60 minutes before eating carob. If you have questions, your pharmacist can double-check timing with you.

Carob is a Mediterranean tree whose pods are widely used as a caffeine-free, naturally sweet cocoa alternative and as a thickener (carob gum). It is mostly eaten as a food and is generally well tolerated, and carob pod preparations have some traditional and limited research use for diarrhea, but evidence for most medicinal claims is limited. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it as a treatment, especially for infants or children.

About Rifampin

What Is Rifampin Used For?

Brand names: Rifadin, Rimactane, Rifadin Injection, Rofactor

Rifampin treats all forms of tuberculosis (TB). It is almost always used in combination with other antibiotics — your doctor will build a multi-drug regimen tailored to your infection. Treatment usually runs for at least 6 months total.

Rifampin is also used to clear Neisseria meningitidis bacteria from the nose and throat in people who carry the germ without being sick themselves. It is not used to treat active meningococcal disease. The intravenous (IV) forms — Rifadin IV, Rifadin IV NOVAPLUS, and the injectable form of Rifampin — are specifically indicated when a patient cannot take the drug by mouth.
