Moxifloxacin falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Chlorella interacts with.

Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.

Here's the gist with moxifloxacin (Avelox) and chlorella. This isn't about how your body breaks down the antibiotic. Instead, both can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Moxifloxacin, like other fluoroquinolone antibiotics, can already leave you prone to easy sunburn or a rash on sun-exposed skin. Chlorella has been linked in a few case reports to similar sun-triggered swelling and reddish-purple skin spots.

Stacking the two could, in theory, add up and make a sun reaction more likely. To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based on how each behaves, not strong proof. I'd just be smart about sun protection (sunscreen, hat, covering up) while on the antibiotic, and check with your pharmacist if a rash shows up.

About Moxifloxacin

What Is Moxifloxacin Used For?

Brand name: Avelox

Moxifloxacin tablets and intravenous (IV) injection are approved for adults 18 and older to treat bacterial infections including community-acquired pneumonia, uncomplicated and complicated skin infections, complicated abdominal infections, plague, acute bacterial sinusitis, and acute bacterial flare-ups of chronic bronchitis. Note: moxifloxacin should only be used for sinusitis and chronic bronchitis flare-ups when no other antibiotic option is available, due to the risk of serious side effects.

Moxifloxacin ophthalmic solution (eye drops) — including the brand Vigamox — is a separate, topical formulation used only in the eye to treat bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) caused by susceptible bacteria. The eye drop form is not used for body-wide infections.
