Here's some good news for this particular pairing: ertapenem (Invanz) is given as an injection, not a pill you swallow. The concern on file is that coffee charcoal, like other charcoals, can bind to drugs sitting in your gut and keep them from being absorbed. That worry really only applies to medicines taken by mouth.

Since ertapenem goes straight into a vein or muscle, it skips the digestive tract entirely, so coffee charcoal in your stomach can't grab onto it or weaken how well it fights your infection. In short, this listed interaction doesn't meaningfully apply here. Still, if you take other oral medicines, space them at least two hours from the charcoal, and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you're unsure.

About Ertapenem Injection

What Is Ertapenem Injection Used For?

Brand name: Invanz

Ertapenem injection (brand name Invanz) is used to treat moderate to severe infections in adults and children 3 months and older, including complicated abdominal infections, complicated skin and skin structure infections (including diabetic foot infections without bone infection), community-acquired pneumonia, complicated urinary tract infections including pyelonephritis (kidney infection), and acute pelvic infections such as postpartum uterine infection, septic abortion, and post-surgical gynecologic infections.

In adults only, Invanz is also used to prevent surgical site infection following elective colorectal surgery. It works only against infections caused by bacteria that are susceptible to it — it will not treat viral infections.
