Saxagliptin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Colocynth interacts with.

Theoretically, colocynth might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Small clinical studies show that colocynth fruit powder reduces fasting blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes who are also taking antidiabetes drugs.

Here's the basic idea: colocynth fruit powder has been shown in some small studies to lower fasting blood sugar on its own. So if you pair it with saxagliptin (Onglyza), which already works to bring your sugar down after meals, the two together could push your blood sugar lower than you want. That raises the chance of hypoglycemia, which can show up as shakiness, sweating, dizziness, a fast heartbeat, or feeling foggy and weak.

To be fair, this is a fairly weak, mostly theoretical concern, and saxagliptin by itself rarely causes low sugar. But colocynth is also genuinely toxic and a harsh laxative, so most pharmacists, myself included, would steer you away from it. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist before trying it.

Saxagliptin tablets are used to help adults with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar levels. It is meant to be used together with diet and exercise, either alone or alongside other diabetes medicines.

Saxagliptin tablets are not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis (a dangerous complication where the blood becomes too acidic).
