Valacyclovir falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Dendrobium interacts with.

The dendrobium constituent dendrobine is reported to have convulsant effects. Theoretically, combining dendrobium with pro-convulsant drugs might increase the risk of seizure. Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Here's the gist with Dendrobium and Valtrex (valacyclovir). Dendrobium contains a compound called dendrobine that, at least in lab and animal studies, can act as a convulsant, meaning it may make the brain a little more prone to seizures. Valacyclovir is one of those medicines that, in rare cases (usually at high doses or in people with kidney problems), can also lower the seizure threshold and cause confusion or tremors. So in theory, taking both together could nudge that risk up a bit.

I want to be straight with you: this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave, not real-world reports of people having problems. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if your kidneys aren't perfect or you have a seizure history.

About Valacyclovir

What Is Valacyclovir Used For?

Brand name: Valtrex

Valacyclovir tablets are used in adults to treat cold sores (herpes labialis), genital herpes (initial and recurrent episodes), and shingles (herpes zoster). They can also be taken daily as suppressive therapy to reduce how often genital herpes outbreaks occur, and to lower the risk of passing genital herpes to a partner.

In children and adolescents, valacyclovir tablets are used to treat cold sores in those aged 12 and older, and chickenpox in those aged 2 to under 18. Valacyclovir has not been established as safe and effective for most uses in immunocompromised patients, with the exception of suppressive therapy for genital herpes in HIV-infected adults.
