European Mandrake and Betamethasone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ORAL DRUGS

Why this applies to Betamethasone

Betamethasone falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group European Mandrake interacts with.

Theoretically, concurrent use might increase absorption of some drugs because of inhibited gastrointestinal (GI) motility caused by European mandrake.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

First things first: I want to steer you away from European mandrake entirely. It's a genuinely poisonous plant, and there's no safe, proven reason to take it. So my honest advice is to avoid it, period.

The interaction on file is this: mandrake's tropane alkaloids (like atropine and scopolamine) slow down how your gut moves. In theory, that slower movement could let an oral drug sit longer and be absorbed more fully, which could nudge its levels up. For betamethasone, that would mean a bit more steroid effect (think things like fluid retention, mood or sleep changes, or higher blood sugar). Keep in mind this is theoretical only, based on pharmacology rather than real case reports, and it applies to swallowed betamethasone, not the cream or ointment. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Betamethasone page

“Betamethasone (Celestone, Diprolene) works by quieting the immune system, which is exactly why this list warrants a slow, careful read. More than fifty of the ingredients here are immune stimulants that can push back against the steroid, and another sizable group changes how much of the drug the body absorbs or holds onto.”
