First things first: European mandrake is genuinely toxic, and I would not put it anywhere near your medicine cabinet. Setting that aside, here's the theoretical concern with clomipramine (Anafranil). Mandrake's tropane alkaloids slow down how fast your gut moves things along. When your digestive tract slows, a pill can sit longer and more of it may get absorbed, so blood levels of clomipramine could creep higher than expected.

Higher clomipramine levels can mean stronger side effects: dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, drowsiness, trouble urinating, a racing heart, or confusion. Here's the kicker, clomipramine already causes those same anticholinergic effects on its own, so stacking mandrake on top could really pile them up. This is based on how the chemicals work, not solid studies, but the overlap makes it risky. Please skip the mandrake and check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Concurrent use may cause additive anticholinergic effects and adverse effects. Anticholinergic drugs include conventional medications containing tropane alkaloids such as atropine, as well as phenothiazines, amantadine, some antiparkinson drugs, glutethimide, meperidine, tricyclic antidepressants, antiarrhythmic agents, and antihistamines.

First things first: I really don't want you taking European mandrake at all. It's a toxic nightshade plant with no proven safe use, and that's the bigger concern here. But to answer your question directly, here's the issue when you pair it with clomipramine.

Clomipramine already has its own anticholinergic effects, meaning it can dry you out and slow certain body functions. Mandrake's tropane alkaloids (atropine, scopolamine, hyoscyamine) work the very same way, so putting them together can stack those effects. You might see worse dry mouth, blurry vision, constipation, trouble urinating, a racing heartbeat, confusion, or even overheating. This concern is based on how these chemicals behave rather than hard studies, but the overlap is real. Please skip the mandrake and check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Clomipramine — sold as Anafranil and under the generic name Clomipramine Hydrochloride — is approved to treat obsessions and compulsions in people with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). This includes adults and children/adolescents ages 10 to 17.

To qualify for treatment, the obsessions or compulsions must cause significant distress, take up a lot of time, or noticeably interfere with work, school, or social life.
