Before anything else: please don't take European mandrake at all. It's a genuinely toxic plant, and there's no safe, proven use for it. With that said, here's the idea behind this particular interaction with riluzole. Mandrake's tropane alkaloids (atropine-like compounds) slow down the movement of your gut. When your gut empties more slowly, a swallowed medicine like riluzole can sit longer and potentially get absorbed more fully, which could nudge its levels up.

For riluzole, more in your system could mean more of its usual side effects, such as dizziness, tiredness, nausea, or weakness. Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on how these chemicals behave, not something proven in studies. Riluzole works on its own and is not a prodrug. The real takeaway is the mandrake itself, so please talk with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Riluzole Used For?

Brand names: Rilutek, Tiglutik, Exservan

Riluzole is approved to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) — the progressive neurological disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This indication is shared across all available riluzole products, including tablets (Rilutek, riluzole), the dissolving oral film (Exservan), and the oral suspension (Tiglutik).

Tiglutik oral suspension is notable in that it can also be given through a PEG-tube (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube) for patients who have difficulty swallowing.
