Evodia might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates through induction of CYP1A2.
Evodia extract and the evodia constituent rutaecarpine induce hepatic CYP1A2 enzyme activity. Evodia decreases levels of theophylline and caffeine, CYP1A2 substrates, by about 70% in animal models.

Here's the gist with desipramine and Evodia. Your body clears desipramine partly through a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Lab and animal studies suggest Evodia (and one of its compounds, rutaecarpine) can speed up that enzyme. If it does the same in people, your liver could break down desipramine faster, leaving less of it in your system.

For an antidepressant, that could mean it works less well, so your depression symptoms might creep back. Keep in mind this is based only on test tube and animal research, not human studies, so it's far from certain. Still, since desipramine needs steady levels to do its job, I'd run any Evodia use past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Evodia has demonstrated dose-dependent activity as a proarrhythmic agent in animal and in vitro studies. Evodia infusion in animals extends the action duration potential and induces prolongation of the QT interval and Torsade de pointes.

Here's the gist with Evodia and desipramine. Desipramine is a tricyclic antidepressant, and one of its known quirks is that it can slightly stretch out the heart's electrical cycle, something we call the QT interval. In lab and animal research, Evodia has shown the same kind of effect. Put two QT-stretching things together and the concern is that the effect could add up, which in rare cases raises the risk of an irregular, dangerous heart rhythm.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's theoretical, based on test tube and animal studies, not on human reports. So please don't panic. Still, since desipramine already carries its own heart-rhythm caution, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Evodia, especially if you have any heart history.

What Is Desipramine Used For?

Brand names: Norpramin, Desipramine, Pertofrane

Desipramine hydrochloride tablets — sold under the brand names Norpramin, Desipramine HCL, and Desipramine Hydrochloride — are FDA-approved for the treatment of depression in adults. Norpramin tablets and the generic formulations share this same approved indication.

Desipramine tablets are not approved for use in children. Adolescents and elderly patients may be prescribed it in certain circumstances, but at lower doses and under close supervision.
