Oxcarbazepine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INDUCERS — the group Evodia interacts with.

Theoretically, taking CYP3A4 inducers might decrease the levels and clinical effects of evodia.
Animal research shows that concomitant administration of dexamethasone, a known CYP3A4 inducer, with the alkaloid constituents of evodia significantly reduces the area under the curve (AUC), maximum concentration (Cmax), and half-life of these constituents.

Here's the key thing to understand: in this interaction, it's your Evodia that gets affected, not your oxcarbazepine. Oxcarbazepine is known to speed up (induce) a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Evodia's active compounds appear to be broken down by that same enzyme. So if you take them together, your body may clear out the Evodia faster, which could leave you with less of whatever benefit you were hoping the Evodia would provide.

This is based only on lab and animal research, so it's theoretical and not a cause for alarm. Your oxcarbazepine and its seizure control shouldn't be weakened by Evodia in this scenario. Still, since supplements can be unpredictable, it's worth running it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

What Is Oxcarbazepine Used For?

Brand names: Trileptal, Oxtellar XR

Oxcarbazepine treats partial-onset seizures (seizures that start in one area of the brain). It can be used alone (monotherapy) or alongside other seizure medicines (adjunctive therapy).

For adults, oxcarbazepine tablets, film-coated tablets, and oral suspension are approved for both monotherapy and adjunctive therapy. Oxcarbazepine extended-release tablets are approved for partial-onset seizures in patients 6 years and older. In children, Trileptal and oxcarbazepine oral suspension are approved as monotherapy in children aged 4–16 and as adjunctive therapy in children aged 2–16.
