Riluzole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Evodia interacts with.

Evodia might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates through induction of CYP1A2.
Evodia extract and the evodia constituent rutaecarpine induce hepatic CYP1A2 enzyme activity. Evodia decreases levels of theophylline and caffeine, CYP1A2 substrates, by about 70% in animal models.

Here's the gist for riluzole: your liver relies heavily on an enzyme called CYP1A2 to break this medicine down. Evodia (specifically a compound in it called rutaecarpine) appears to speed that enzyme up. If the enzyme works faster, it can clear riluzole out of your body more quickly, which may leave less drug working to protect your nerve and muscle function in ALS.

Now, the honest part: this is based on lab and animal studies, not real patients, so the actual impact in people is uncertain. Still, in ALS you don't want to risk a weaker effect from a medication that matters. Riluzole isn't a prodrug, so the direction holds: less benefit, not more. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two.

What Is Riluzole Used For?

Riluzole is approved to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) — the progressive neurological disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This indication is shared across all available riluzole products, including tablets (Rilutek, riluzole), the dissolving oral film (Exservan), and the oral suspension (Tiglutik).

Tiglutik oral suspension is notable in that it can also be given through a PEG-tube (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube) for patients who have difficulty swallowing.
