Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Tarka combines two blood pressure medicines in one pill: trandolapril (an ACE inhibitor) and verapamil (a calcium channel blocker). The idea here is pretty mild. Some studies show that certain fermented milks, like specific probiotic yogurts or cultured drinks, may nudge the top number (systolic) of your blood pressure down a little. If that small dip stacks on top of what Tarka is already doing, you could in theory feel the effects of low blood pressure a bit more.

What that might feel like is dizziness, lightheadedness when standing up, or feeling unusually tired. To be clear, this is theoretical and based on how things work on paper, not a proven problem. Normal food amounts of yogurt or kefir are very unlikely to matter. If you take concentrated supplements or notice any of those symptoms, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Trandolapril, Verapamil page

“This is one of the supplement lists I would want a patient to read closely, not skim. Tarka combines trandolapril and verapamil to lower blood pressure, and most of these interactions pull on that same lever, either dropping pressure further than intended or working against the medicine altogether.”
