In vitro evidence shows that fulvic acid, formed from the oxidation and polymerization of protocatechuic acid, can shorten prothrombin time in human plasma, increasing the risk of clot formation.

Here's the basic idea. Defibrotide is a clot-fighting medicine given in the hospital to protect the small blood vessels in your liver after a stem-cell transplant. Fulvic acid, at least in test-tube studies, seems to nudge the blood toward clotting more easily (it shortened a lab clotting measure called prothrombin time). So in theory, fulvic acid could work against what defibrotide is trying to do, possibly making it a bit less effective.

I want to keep this in perspective, though. This concern is theoretical and comes from lab research, not from real patients. On top of that, defibrotide is given by IV in a closely monitored hospital setting, so your team controls the situation carefully. Still, mention any supplement, including fulvic acid, to your transplant team or pharmacist so nothing interferes with your treatment.

What Is Defibrotide Injection Used For?

Defitelio (defibrotide injection) is used to treat hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) — also called sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) — in adult and pediatric patients. This is a serious condition where small blood vessels in the liver become blocked, most often after a hematopoietic stem-cell transplant (HSCT).

Defitelio is specifically indicated when VOD is accompanied by kidney dysfunction or pulmonary (lung) dysfunction, making it a treatment for one of the most severe forms of this complication.
