Why this applies to Lansoprazole

Lansoprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group German Chamomile interacts with.

Theoretically, German chamomile might inhibit CYP3A4 and increase levels of drugs metabolized by these enzymes.
In vitro evidence shows that German chamomile might inhibit CYP3A4. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, there might be an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking German chamomile.

Here's the basic idea: your body partly relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down lansoprazole. German chamomile, in lab studies, appears to slow that enzyme down a bit. In theory, that could let a little more lansoprazole linger in your system, which might nudge up the usual side effects, things like headache, nausea, diarrhea, or stomach discomfort.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This signal comes only from test-tube research, not from real people, and it has never actually been reported in humans. A cup of chamomile tea is very unlikely to cause any trouble with your Prevacid. If you're using concentrated chamomile capsules daily, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

German chamomile is a widely used herbal remedy taken mainly as a tea for calming, sleep, and digestive complaints. What Is Lansoprazole Used For?

Brand name: Prevacid

Lansoprazole is prescribed for a range of conditions where excess stomach acid is the problem. It treats active stomach and duodenal ulcers (sores in the stomach or upper small intestine), helps heal ulcers caused by NSAID pain relievers, and can reduce the risk of those ulcers coming back.

It's also used for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis (acid damage to the esophagus), and rare conditions where the stomach makes far too much acid — like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. When combined with antibiotics, it helps wipe out H. pylori bacteria that cause recurring ulcers.
