Glyconutrients and Pretomanid

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Pretomanid

Pretomanid falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Glyconutrients interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that glyconutrients stimulate certain immune responses. Theoretically, glyconutrients might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), corticosteroids (glucocorticoids), and others.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's an honest take on this one: the interaction we have on file lumps Pretomanid in with immunosuppressant drugs, but that's a poor fit. Pretomanid is actually an antibiotic used (alongside bedaquiline and linezolid) to treat multi-drug resistant tuberculosis. It works by killing TB bacteria, not by quieting your immune system. So the theory behind the warning, that glyconutrients might 'rev up' immune responses and fight against immune-suppressing therapy, doesn't really apply to how Pretomanid does its job.

This concern is also only theoretical, based on lab dish research, not on real patients. I wouldn't expect glyconutrients to change how well Pretomanid clears your TB infection. Still, because TB treatment is serious and timing matters, it's worth running any supplement past your pharmacist or TB care team before adding it.

“Pretomanid is reserved for highly drug-resistant tuberculosis, and it can stress the liver and lengthen the heart's QT interval, so the supplements on this page deserve genuine care. About Glyconutrients

What is Glyconutrients?

  • General immune support
  • Overall wellness and energy
  • Cognitive or memory support
  • Inflammation
  • Digestive health

Glyconutrients are supplements containing certain sugar molecules (monosaccharides) that marketers claim are essential for cell communication and health. The science behind most health claims is weak and largely promotional, and your body already makes these sugars from a normal diet. They are generally low-risk, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using them, and don't rely on them to treat any disease.

About Pretomanid

What Is Pretomanid Used For?

Brand name: Pretomanid

Pretomanid Tablet is used only as part of a three-drug regimen — together with bedaquiline and linezolid — to treat adults with pulmonary (lung) tuberculosis that is resistant to multiple antibiotics, including isoniazid, rifamycins, a fluoroquinolone, and a second-line injectable TB drug. It is also used for adults whose TB is resistant to isoniazid and rifampin and who cannot tolerate or are not responding to standard TB therapy.

Pretomanid Tablets are not for drug-sensitive TB, latent (inactive) TB infection, TB outside the lungs, or TB that responds to standard treatment. They should only be used in combination with bedaquiline and linezolid — safety and effectiveness with other drug combinations have not been established.
