Eprosartan falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Goldenseal interacts with.

Theoretically, goldenseal might increase the risk of hypotension when taken with antihypertensive drugs.
Goldenseal contains berberine. Animal research shows that berberine can have hypotensive effects. Also, an analysis of clinical research shows that taking berberine in combination with amlodipine can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure when compared with amlodipine alone. However, this effect has not been reported with goldenseal.

Here's the gist if you take goldenseal alongside eprosartan (Teveten). Eprosartan already lowers your blood pressure by relaxing your blood vessels. Goldenseal contains berberine, and in animal studies berberine seemed to lower blood pressure too. So the worry is simple: stacking the two could push your numbers down a little more than expected, leaving you feeling lightheaded, dizzy, tired, or shaky when you stand up quickly.

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how berberine behaves, not on real reports with goldenseal itself, so it's not something to panic over. Eprosartan isn't a prodrug, so we're just talking about added blood pressure lowering, not a metabolism change. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and keep an eye on your readings.

  • Eprosartan is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. Eprosartan is in a class of medications called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It works by blocking the action of certain natural substances that tighten the blood vessels, allowing the blood to flow more smoothly and the heart to pump more efficiently.

  • High blood pressure is a common condition, and when not treated it can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys, and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems. In addition to taking medication, making lifestyle changes will also help to control your blood pressure. These changes include eating a diet that is low in fat and salt, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising at least 30 minutes most days, not smoking, and using alcohol in moderation.
