Here's the simple version: your child's seizure medicine, fenfluramine, is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP2D6. Goldenseal can slow that enzyme down. When the enzyme works slower, fenfluramine can build up in the body more than expected. This is the active drug itself (not a prodrug), so higher levels usually mean a stronger effect and a greater chance of side effects.

With more fenfluramine around, you might notice things like drowsiness, poor appetite, tiredness, or feeling unsteady. The evidence here comes from a lower quality study, so it's a real possibility rather than a certainty. Because seizure medicines need steady, careful dosing, please don't add goldenseal without first checking with your pharmacist or your child's neurologist.

What Is Fenfluramine Used For?

Brand name: Pondimin

Fintepla (fenfluramine oral solution) is approved to treat seizures associated with Dravet syndrome (DS) and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) in patients 2 years of age and older. It is used alongside other antiseizure medications.

Both conditions are severe, often hard-to-control forms of epilepsy that typically begin in childhood. Fintepla is available only through a restricted program called the Fintepla REMS because of serious heart-related risks.
