Guanabenz Acetate falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Goldenseal interacts with.

Theoretically, goldenseal might increase the risk of hypotension when taken with antihypertensive drugs.
Goldenseal contains berberine. Animal research shows that berberine can have hypotensive effects. Also, an analysis of clinical research shows that taking berberine in combination with amlodipine can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure when compared with amlodipine alone. However, this effect has not been reported with goldenseal.

Here's the gist if you're taking guanabenz (Wytensin) for blood pressure and thinking about goldenseal. Goldenseal contains berberine, and in animal studies berberine seems to lower blood pressure on its own. Since guanabenz already relaxes your blood vessels and slows your heart rate to bring pressure down, pairing the two could, in theory, push your blood pressure a little too low.

If that happened, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, drowsy, or faint when standing up. To be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how berberine behaves, not something proven with goldenseal in people, so the risk is likely modest. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't change your guanabenz on your own.

What Is Guanabenz Used For?

  • Guanabenz is used to treat high blood pressure. It is in a class of medications called centrally acting alpha2A-adrenergic receptor agonists. Guanabenz works by decreasing your heart rate and relaxing the blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily through the body.

  • High blood pressure is a common condition and when not treated, can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems. In addition to taking medication, making lifestyle changes will also help to control your blood pressure. These changes include eating a diet that is low in fat and salt, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising at least 30 minutes most days, not smoking, and using alcohol in moderation.
