Why this applies to Axitinib

Axitinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the gist for Inlyta (axitinib): your liver clears it mainly through an enzyme called CYP3A4. Goldthread contains berberine, which lab work hints may slow that enzyme down. If that happens, axitinib could clear out more slowly and build up in your body. Axitinib is not a prodrug, so higher levels would mean stronger effects and a greater chance of side effects like high blood pressure, fatigue, diarrhea, mouth sores, or hand-foot skin reactions.

I want to be honest, though: this is very preliminary, based on how berberine behaves in the lab, and it has not actually been reported in people. Still, because axitinib is a serious cancer medicine, please loop in your oncologist or pharmacist before adding goldthread.

What Is Axitinib Used For?

Brand name: Inlyta

Axitinib (brand name Inlyta) is used to treat advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC), a type of kidney cancer. Inlyta can be used as a first-line treatment — meaning the very first treatment you receive — when combined with either avelumab or pembrolizumab, two other cancer medicines.

Inlyta is also approved as a single agent (on its own) for patients with advanced RCC who have already tried one other systemic (body-wide) cancer therapy that did not work or stopped working.
