Buspirone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the thing with buspirone: your body relies heavily on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break it down. The berberine in goldthread may slow that same enzyme down, at least in early lab work. If it does, your buspirone could clear more slowly and build up a bit higher than usual.

In practice that might mean more of buspirone's usual side effects, like dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, nausea, or feeling a little foggy. I want to be honest though, this is only a theoretical concern based on how berberine behaves in the lab. It hasn't actually been reported in real people. Still, I'd run it past your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two, just to be safe.

Buspirone tablets and capsules are used to manage anxiety disorders or to relieve anxiety symptoms in the short term. Its effectiveness has been shown in clinical trials focused on Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) — a condition marked by persistent, hard-to-control worry along with physical symptoms like muscle tension, restlessness, difficulty concentrating, and sleep problems.

Buspirone has also been shown to relieve anxiety in people who have mild depressive symptoms alongside their anxiety. Everyday stress and tension, on their own, generally do not require treatment with a medicine like buspirone.
