Why this applies to Levobupivacaine

Levobupivacaine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldthread interacts with.

There's very preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of goldthread, might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking goldthread. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use goldthread cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Levobupivacaine (Chirocaine) is a local anesthetic, usually given as an injection or nerve block by a clinician during a procedure. Your body partly clears it through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. The berberine in goldthread may slow that enzyme down, at least based on early lab work, so in theory the drug could linger longer than expected. That could nudge up the risk of side effects like dizziness, ringing in the ears, a numb or tingling mouth, or in rare cases heart rhythm or nervous system effects.

That said, this is theoretical only and hasn't been seen in real patients. Since levobupivacaine is given in a controlled clinical setting, simply let the team know about any goldthread or berberine supplement you take, and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
